Episodes

Ja-Kal has appeared in every episode except in Show Me the Mummy, where he only appears in stock footage.

Appearance

Ja-Kal has the typical greyish-blue mummy skin, and beige bandages covering his body, with the exception of his jaw, his elbows, his fingers, and partially, his knees. He characteristically has two bandages falling from the sides of his head down onto his chest and a single bandage covering the bridge of his nose. He wears a golden falcon amulet with a blue gem around his neck, and a white skirt with a blue rim around the waist and end of the skirt. The skirt also has a golden orb with golden and blue wings on its sides, and two smaller golden wings on the bottom. Finally, he wears two loin cloths, a small, blue one with a triangular end, and a similar, larger, yellow one underneath. Ja-Kal also has blue eyes.

Once powered up, Ja-Kal gains armor in the shape of a falcon. It has a golden helmet, with blue decorations on the top, three golden feather-like plates on its side, all held together with a blue orb. His jaw armor has a small blue beard. Underneath his helmet, he has a striped yellow and blue cloth, resembling a typical pharaoh nemes. His neck and chest is covered by black fabric, with a single piece of white fabric on top that holds his amulet's gem. On top of the fabric, Ja-Kal has a triangular piece of armor resembling a wing on each side of his body. On his back is armor resembling a jetpack with blue markings, that houses his golden wings, which extend outward and are colored blue on the top. His gauntlets are primarily blue, with golden parts around his wrist and elbows. The gauntlets also have a blue gem, surrounded by a golden, upside down "Ω" symbol. These traits are also features on his kneepads. He has blue gloves, with golden knuckles and claws, and finally, golden shoes that end on three sharp ends, similar to a falcon's foot.

As a human, Ja-Kal had a soft tanned skin color. He wore a yellow loin cloth around his head, with blue markings, and armor around his chest, similar to his powered-up design. He also had golden wristbands and a single armband on his upper left arm. Ja-Kal wore the same skirt around his waist, and simpler gold and blue kneepads, as well as shoes.

In The Prince and the Presley, Ja-Kal wore a dark grey beanie and pants, an orange jacket with a blue circle on the left, and a blue shirt underneath.

In The Face in the Mirror, Ja-Kal wore a blue shirt with two pockets on the chest, a yellow T-shirt underneath and beige pants.

In Kid Scarab, he wore a faded green trench coat and hat, and big black boots.

In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Huxley, he sported a yellow shirt and pants, with blue and black leopard prints around the collar and sleeves, as well as light blue, combed back hair and gold glasses.

In Monster Truck Mania, he wore a green jacket with thin stripes, a backwards green hat, a white T-Shirt and blue jeans.

Finally, in We've Got One, Ja-Kal wore a white poet shirt, blue shorts with rips around its ends, and red socks all the way up to his knees. He also wore a nurse's outfit, and a yellow hazmat suit.

History

Ja-kal's family - Mummies Alive!3

Ja-Kal with his wife, Tia, and his son, Padjet in ancient Egypt.

In ancient Egypt, Ja-Kal grew up with his older brother, Arakh. According to Arakh, both they used to compete for their fathers' attention. Ja-Kal used to go on fishing trips with his dad. and eventually both of them found their way in Amenhotep's palace, where they served their pharaoh. Ja-Kal also had a family, a wife named Tia and a son named Padjet. One day, when he, alongside his brother and the pharaoh were out hunting, they got attacked by a lion. Arakh got attacked by the lion, losing one of his eyes, but Ja-Kal was able to save his life by capturing it. This infuriated Arakh, who said that he could handle it by himself, and turned against his brother, eventually siding with Scarab. However, this act of bravery made Amenhotep give Ja-Kal the role of the leader in the Royal Hunt, and to train his son, Prince Rapses in hunting.

Meanwhile, Scarab was devising a plan to overthrow the pharaoh, and take leadership of the kingdom, by killing Rapses, stealing his spirit, and becoming immortal, a power necessary to defeat the pharaoh. One night, he was able to complete his plan, and steal the young prince's spirit. Ja-Kal and the prince's other guardians were on the look out for the young prince, but when they found Scarab it was already too late. Scarab, alongside his Shabti army and Arakh, defeated the guardians. After his death, the pharaoh mummified Ja-Kal, gave him a magical amulet and destined him to protect his reincarnated son in the future.

Jakal show 33

Ja-Kal with Presley, talking about his past life.

In 1997, Ja-Kal, alongside the other mummified guardians were discovered and brought to a museum in San Francisco for an exhibit showcasing the life of prince Rapses. The exhibit was funded by Scarab who was still alive, in hopes that it would attract the reincarnation of Rapses, which we find out is a young boy named Presley. Scarab suceeds, bringing the young boy to him, but he has also brought unwillingly the mummified guardians who are there to stop him. Ja-Kal and the other guardians are re-awakened and stop Scarab from getting Presley. Ja-Kal and the other guardians now protect Presley from Scarab and his forces, as well as other threats which emerge throughout the series.

Jakal gift of geb

Ja-Kal held hostage by Shabties.

Ja-Kal has had a major role in a lot of parts throughout the show's story. In The Gift of Geb, he infiltrated Scarab's Ship, as a means to push Geb through the Western Gate. He succeeds in doing so, ramming the ship through Geb and pushing him through the portal, but as he was escaping, his amulet's power depleted and he was captured by Scarab, who used him as a means of blackmail, demanding Rapses's spirit in exchange for Ja-Kal's life. Ja-Kal tried to tell Presley not to move along with Scarab's deal, but Presley refused. Then, the Mummies came to rescue Ja-Kal and defeated Scarab, using Geb, who had reemerged from the Western Gate during the eclipse.

Jakal reunion

Ja-Kal looking at Amenhotep with sceptisism.

In Reunion, when Scarab, disguised as Amenhotep, tried to convince the Mummies that their pharaoh had returned, Ja-Kal was the only one who initially sensed something was wrong about the pharaoh, and it turned out his instinct was right when "Amenhotep" revealed his true colors and tried to capture the prince's spirit. In this episode, the implications of Ja-Kal caring about Presley for more than just a guardian, but as well as a father figure are first shown.

Jakal missing jakal

Ja-Kal, weakened by the Falcon Idol.

Ja-Kal, being one of the reasons Scarab's plans failed each time, made Scarab actively want to take out the leader of the Mummies first, in order to destroy them one by one. In Missing Ja-Kal, Scarab used a magical Falcon Idol made from ancient sacred sands on Ja-Kal, which weakened him greatly. The Mummies also start showing their frustration about Ja-Kal's leadership. When an accident in the Sphinx involving the Hot-Ra took place, Ja-Kal decided it was best to leave for a while, so that he won't endanger Presley. When Scarab attacks the Mummies by surprise during a school dance, Ja-Kal returns and destroys the idol, stopping the effects, regaining his strength and taking back the charge of his team, proving why he is the most capable of being the leader.

Jakal dark and shrieky night

Ja-Kal presenting himself as an alien to Joe Pendleton.

In A Dark and Shrieky Night, Ja-Kal and the Mummies find themselves powerless in San Francisco, placing them under extreme danger. Ja-Kal tries to get himself and the Mummies back to the Sphinx where he and the other guardians can recharge themselves. The Mummies however have to pass a lot of obstacles, including Joe Pendleton, a police officer whos looking for extra terrestrials sightings in San Francisco, and pursued the Mummies throughout the night, thinking they were visitors from another planet. Ja-Kal impersonates an alien, and convinces Joe to leave him and the Mummies alone, trying to scare him in the process, as a means of distraction. He makes his way back to the Sphinx just in time.

Jakal dr jekyll and mr huxley

Ja-Kal and Mr.Huxley under the effects of the Obelisk.

Encounters such as these slowly made Ja-Kal realize that the Mummies need to hide their identities in this modern world a bit better, if they want to keep a low profile, and Presley safe. In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Huxley, Ja-Kal tries to hide anything that could reveal their existence, including an Obelisk created by Rath, to replace a school science project made by Presley, that got destroyed in one of the many encounters with Scarab. The obelisk turns Presley's science teacher, Mr. Huxley, into a power hungry villain, and the Mummies try to stop him. Ja-Kal however is affected by the obelisk as well, changing his personality and allegiance, turning him into "Jackie the Great". Thankfully, Presley manages to save both him and Mr. Huxley, as the obelisk's effects run out on them.

Jakal eye of the beholder

Tia trying to persuade Ja-Kal into going with her.

In Eye of the Beholder, Chantra, an evil witch and Rath's former student, makes her way into the Sphinx and tries to destroy her former master. Chantra disguises herself as loved ones from the Mummies' past. In Ja-Kal's case, Chantra turns into his old wife, Tia, and makes Ja-Kal miss the family he left behind thousands of years ago, telling him he should let go off his duties as the reincarnated prince's protector, and to return to the Western Gate with her, which Ja-Kal reluctantly refuses.

Jakal bird mummy of alcatraz

Armon busting Ja-Kal out of a jail cell.

On a visit to Alcatraz Island in The Bird-Mummy of Alcatraz, Presley and the Mummies find themselves in yet another encounter with Scarab, where he tries to ambush and destroy them for good. Ja-Kal comes really close to being defeated, after he runs out of power and is held as a prisoner by Scarab. But after the Mummies help him escape, they take the ghouls out and make a run for it. After Rath accidentally turned the ghouls into the Phoenix, Presley recharges Ja-Kal's power with his own amulet and he helps take it down, flying and tricking into diving itself into the sea.

Jakal my dad the hero

Ja-Kal fighting with kaiju Scarab.

In My Dad the Hero, Ja-Kal and the Mummies meet Presley's father, Paul Carnovan who is unwillingly working with Scarab to make some more money, and brings him the Crown of Ramses, a magical item of great power. Ja-Kal initially doesn't like Paul, and thinks he is a bad influence to Presley, showing off more of his fatherly side. Eventually, him and Paul get into an argument regarding Presley's nurture, but later on they decide they need to team up in order to defeat the now kaiju-sized Scarab. In the end, Ja-Kal and Paul make amends and looks in sorrow as Paul has to leave Presley once again, realizing he needs to fit that role.

Jakal family feud

Ja-Kal laying on the ground, defeated.

Arguably the most important event is Ja-Kal's life throughout the show is when Scarab, with the help of Set and Anubis, brings his brother, Arakh, back from the dead, as well as his son (and Ja-Kal's nephew) Kimas. Ja-Kal is surprised to see his brother after all these years, but Arakh is sworn on destroying his brother once and for all. Ja-Kal tries to convince Kimas to not fight in his brother's side but rather help him defeat Scarab. Kimas initially agrees, but we later find out that his plan was to gain Ja-Kal's trust and later turn against him when he least expects it. However, after seeing his father's true and evil nature, he decides to help Ja-Kal and the Mummies defeat his father and Scarab. During battle, Arakh fires a beam at Ja-Kal, knocking his bow out of his hand and injuring him. Kimas steals the scorpion charm from his father and cracks it, sending himself and Arakh back through the Western Gate once and for all, after destroying their amulet. This event caused Ja-Kal to further question his true purpose, and if he must always choose his duties as the pharaoh's protector, instead of his own family.

Personality

Amulet ja-kal

Ja-Kal's amulet and emblem.

Ja-Kal is a loyal and honest person. He will always try to accomplish what's best for his friends and himself. Ja-Kal is also very serious, and a typical example of someone putting their work first, and their own well being second. He takes his duties of protecting the pharaoh very seriously, more so than any other of the Mummies. Throughout the show, he acts as a father figure for Presley, trying to both teach him in combat, and critical thinking, to overcome obstacles that may come, over doing so using hunting terms to talk to others and explain situations. Ja-Kal focuses so much on his duties in order to make up for when he first failed his task of keeping Rapses alive, in ancient Egypt. Ja-Kal doesn't wish to fail in his mission. To him, the harder you work, a better person you become. However Ja-Kal isn't a close minded person, and will often listen to other people's opinions regardless of him being the leader of the group. Despite that, we see many examples were Ja-Kal takes his duties and privilage of leadership a bit too seriously, causing arguments within the group of what's the best option to take regarding a situation, such as when Nefertina was under the influence of Bastet and Ja-Kal had no second thoughts regarding her defeat, if it meant to save Presley's life, which caused an argument with the rest of the Mummies. Ja-Kal has also been shown to question his true purpose, and tries to hide his feelings regarding the family he left behind, often wondering what's more important, his family or his duties, and whether or not devoting his life to protecting the young prince was the right choice to take. This however barely stops him from saving the life of his friends, and will even sacrifice himself with no hesitation if it means to save others.

Powers and Abilities

As mentioned before, Ja-Kal being the leader of the Mummies has great leadership skills. He is sharp minded and tries to figure out the best way to defeat his opponent. Ja-Kal is also a great hunter, managing to become the leader in the Royal Hunt, which also landed him the task of protecting Prince Rapses. Just like the other mummies, he possesses a magical amulet shaped after a falcons's head, that gives him falcon-shaped armor. With this armor, his strength and durability is greatly amplified. Unlike the other Mummies however, he also gains the ability to fly, sprouting two golden wings from his back. His armor has sharp claws, able to cut through most things, including Shabties. Ja-Kal's weapon is a bow, that is able to shoot slightly explosive arrows made of fire. Also just like the other mummies, he can transform his face in order to scare his enemies, growing sharp teeth and horn/tentacle-like appendages, or either pop his eyes out and grow his tongue. Another ability he shares with the other mummies is also the ability to use his bandages as a means to sling across the city and wrap up his foes.

Trivia

  • Horus, the falcon-headed god of the Sky, war and protection was revealed to be Ja-Kal's patron god in the packaging for his action figure.
    • This is further supported by the fact that in ancient Egyptian mythology, Horus was missing an eye, a trait that is interestingly enough seen in original concept art for Ja-Kal.
  • As mentioned before, in the original concept art, Ja-Kal was missing an eye. This trait would later be used by his brother Arakh in the show.
  • Ja-Kal has been shown to be skilled with a number of different weapons outside of his bow, including the Boomer-Ra and a spear he used to have in ancient Egypt.
  • Ja-Kal likes to say symbolic phrases involving animals, usually to get his point across.
  • Ja-Kal has had the most variety involving his "Fright-Sight appearance. In its first appearance, Ja-Kal grew bony protrusions and sharp teeth, as well as turn his eyes red. In other iterations, he grew face tendrils, a third red eye, and his mouth has fused together, leaving gaps in between. In A Dark and Shrieky Night, as well as his Fright-Sight action figure, Ja-Kal opens his mouth to reveal a giant tongue, and makes his eyes pop-out of their sockets, in a cartoony fashion.
  • Outside of hunting, other hobbies Ja-Kal enjoys are working out, practicing his archery skills, and fishing.
  • In an interview by Seth Kearsley, it was revealed that one of the plans for Season 2 was to involve Ja-Kal and Amanda Carnovan in a romantic relationship.
